Kara Wissing (she/her/hers) is New Hour’s year-long intern, a senior due to graduate with a Bachelors of Social Work program at Stony Brook University. She is on track to graduate on the Dean’s List in May 2021 and participate in Advanced Standing status for her Masters in Social Work. She has experience in the fields of direct service and advocacy surrounding substance use, mental health, LGBTQ+ populations, working with displaced individuals and the foster care system. She is fervent about the capabilities of large scale policy change trickle down to make tangible change to individuals, families and communities. She stands with New Hour through direct support of our New Hour’s members who are both incarcerated and in re-entry, group co-facilitation and advocacy work within the carceral system. Kara is eager to continue developing her education as a Forensic Social Worker surrounding criminal justice reform.
